Managing our impacts

We are reducing our impacts on the environment in a number of different ways, which primarily relates to UN SDGs (12) Responsible consumption and production; and (13) Climate action.  Sustainable consumption and production aims at “doing more and better with less,” increasing net welfare gains from economic activities by reducing resource use, degradation and pollution along the whole lifecycle, and increasing quality of life.

We have a number of initiatives to reduce waste across our operations and have achieved zero to landfill.

Transport is a big part of our operations and we have been highly successful in reducing our emissions and increasing our efficiency across our transport fleet. The increased number of Euro VI vehicles on our fleet means that our average emissions standard improved in 2016/17 alone by 21% and we have continued to invest in new technology and 85% of our delivery vehicles are now fitted with telematics, which means driver behaviour can be measured more effectively, improving efficiency.

Reducing our energy demand has been a key part of reducing our overall impact on the environment. We have been running our ‘load shedding’ programme to help manage demand and ultimately reduce energy consumption across our sites. Where we can, at set times during the day, we turn our refrigeration plant off. We have also been undertaking initiatives at different sites across the country.

LED replacement programme

Our facilities team has been replacing LED light fixtures and fittings that were installed five years ago over 17 sites. We project that this will ensure a 4% reduction in electricity use and over 560 tonnes of CO2.
