Princes have formally set ourselves the target of Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 ;
By 2030, to halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels, and to reduce food losses along production and supply chains.
We have partnered with the UK’s leading hunger and food waste charity FareShare since 2013 and donations to them of product we cannot sell but remain fit for consumption remain ongoing….126 tonnes last year ( see below) .
There’s lots more for us to do. Next week every Environmental manager form each of our operations will be at our Head Office for a Food Waste day to agree how we can renew our focus on waste in our operations. Not just less waste but using it better, working harder to get it back into the human food chain and – who knows – perhaps finding better revenue for it.
But as SDG 12.3 requires us to consider farm to fork we need to reach our suppliers and consumers. Our marketing teams have committed to building in more messaging to consumers through our brands – Princes, Napolina, Crosse & Blackwell and many more – on how to reduce waste in the home. Our buying teams are working now on communications to suppliers, asking them to join us in SDG 12.3 and calling on them to challenge Princes ; if we are causing them unnecessary waste tell us and we will do something about it together.
